Children With Voices

Serving the communities of Somerville and Cambridge, Children With Voices offers services to children who have witnessed

domestic violence and their non-offending parents. Services include individual, family and group therapy and are offered in

English and Spanish at locations in Cambridge and Somerville. For more information call the Director of the program,

COPE Program

The COPE (Co-operative Parenting Education) Program is designed to help pregnant and parenting teens in the Somerville

School system maintain their academic focus for high school graduation while learning parenting skills. Students work closely with their COPE counselor who helps them access community support services such as daycare, midwives and doulas, academic tutoring, mental health services and home visiting programs. The COPE counselor actively advocates for each student with faculty and staff, encouraging open communication and support. Active participation and attendance in this program gives the opportunity for academic credit via monthly workshops and reports. Regular group meetings allow a supportive environment for students to identify and cope with life transitions.

The Center helps Head Start parents connect with appropriate resources to assist them in the areas of literacy, education,

employment, substance abuse and other needs. Computer classes, including programs teaching English and Spanish, are

also offered. Other services available are parent education and support groups, a lending library and a playroom used by children while parents are using the computers or in meetings.

Parents Helping Parents is a network of mutual support groups for parents who are isolated, overwhelmed, and want to build a more positive relationship with their children. Weekly meetings are open to all parents, free of charge. Groups are lead by volunteer facilitators. Childcare and transportation are provided when possible. Call the toll-free number above, M-F, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm to speak to a counselor who can talk with you and make a referral to a local group.

 

SCALE (Somerville Center for Adult Learning Experiences)

SCALE provides: Adult Basic Education (ABE) for students who need to improve basic reading, writing, and math skills; Adult

Secondary Education (ASE) for students preparing for a high school credential, whether Adult Diploma Program (ADP) or

General Equivalency Diploma (GED); and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), for students who need to learn or

improve their English. All programs have both day and evening classes.

The Somerville Family Network is a multi-service family organization. The SFN offers many program services, including parent-child playgroups, monthly Family Fun Nights, a lending library, museum pass, ESL classes and parent workshops. In

addition, SFN staff can help parents locate other resources in the community. English, French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese and Spanish are spoken in all programs and services are free.

LEAD ED, a part of the Somerville Health Department, provides hands-on information and training to parents, children, and the

general public about keeping children lead-safe. Information is available in many languages.

 

 

Title I Parent Center

The Center provides support, activities, information, and instructional materials for parents of children receiving Title I services. Parents can participate in workshops and several week for about 8 weeks. The center is open from 8:00 am - 2:30 pm. Please call the number above for a current schedule of classes and other activities. Different parenting skills groups held throughout the school year.

Sessions are usually held from 9:00 am - 10:30 am one day a week.
